For Educators

What MathOtter is

  • A supplemental practice source, not a course. MathOtter doesn't replace what you do -- it can amplify your efforts. You can use it to assign practice problems on specific topics to individual students. It provides practice problems, answers, and step-by-step solutions to reinforce online or in-person instruction.
  • Built for struggling adult learners, particularly those preparing for GED math -- but it can be used by anyone seeking additional math practice.
  • Easy for students to use! The web app runs in the browser on nearly any device with a modern web browser. You can assign a set of problems for students to work on without any friction (no signup, ads, installation or personal information required).
  • No grading or progress tracking. Learners practice, check answers, and study the step-by-step solutions.
  • Founded on classroom experience. The topic choices reflect gaps seen firsthand while teaching. This includes common stumbling blocks: signed-integer arithmetic, fractions and decimals, for example.

What makes the content distinctive

  • Problem-specific scalable visuals. Plotted inequalities, linear function graphs, number lines, and geometric shapes are drawn for the actual problem -- not just generic illustrations.
  • Carefully curated "clean" numbers. System of equations solutions are integer points; quadratic formula problems have positive perfect-square discriminants. Students can focus on concepts instead of messy arithmetic.
  • Broad, deep coverage. More than 90 topics ("flashcards") spanning number sense, fractions, exponents and roots, mathematical reasoning, equations, linear functions, geometry, data analysis, and probability.
  • Wide range of problem volume. From about 30 hand-written word problems on some topics to millions of generated permutations on others.
  • Imbedded calculator emulator. For some key topics, an emulation of the TI-30XS is included. It steps the student through the key sequences for the exact problem they are working on.
